There are criteria or laws that a doctor must follow before they can pronounce someone dead. Usually, either someone’s heart and lungs have stopped working or their brain has stopped functioning, you might have heard of it as ‘brain dead’. When someone is brain dead the heart and lungs are still working, but the patient won’t be able to return from their current condition, so in legal terms are dead. The organs that are still working can be donated to others that might need them.
