The fun thing that I’ve learnt with getting into natural language processing is that I don’t know that much about computers. Understanding computer science does mean you use a computer a lot more, but you also learn a lot more about what you couldn’t have possibly known beforehand!
Definetely! In my role I need to be able to fix a lot of different kind of issues including when pieces of equipment that use a computer are not working! Sometimes it is the equipment, but sometimes it is the computer, so I need to be able to figure out what is wrong and then how to fix it.
Absolutely – yes. But in a very specialist way. I can do lots of maths modelling, and analyse data and images. But my kids are still waaaay better than me at using social media!
Absolutely! I didn’t even have a computer before going to University, and now I can’t live without it, and can do so many things that I never thought I’d be able to do!
Studying science and working in research have given me a lot of very cool learning opportunities related to computing, and taught me how to adapt to new pieces of equipment and software, and to try to fix issues myself if needed.

Yes – I have spent around 1000 hours programming things using computers. Its not something I would be very good at if I hadn’t studied Physics.
