I think the way they respond to different treatments is really interesting, down to their shape and the way they look. I really enjoy staining cells using special fluorescent antibodies, so we can use different antibodies that ‘stick’ to different things, which can help us see what is happening to different processes within the cells, from parts of their microscopic structure, to points of DNA breakage, to activating specific proteins. Plus it’s pretty!
mitochondria in cells have their own DNA, as well as being really useful (they power cells biochemical reactions), its thought that they started off as parasites!
