      Hi Erin
I was looking at how effective oregano essential oil was at killing bacteria and what was the lowest concentration required for this oil to kill bacteria so that it would be used in hand sanitisers and other cleaning detergents for use in hospitals. i found this realy interesting as I would apply it to real life scenarios

One project I was involved in used cells from human blood called neutrophils. These cells move around very quickly and look for invaders, like bacteria. We found out that they can change shape to “fish” for bacteria by sending out long “fishing lines” from their cell bodies and reel in the bacteria to eat them. It was really fascinating – and awesome to watch down a microscope!

One of the most interesting things I have researched is the Glassy-state of water. If you freeze water really fast at high pressure, then the structure of the ice is not like normal ice which has a crystal-like structure, it is denser – like glass! This type of ice is actually the most common ice in space, unlike on Earth, where our ice is mostly crystalline and floats on water 🙂

My current research is on sepsis diagnosis. Sepsis is a blood stream infection that has a fatality rate of 32%. It can take 72 hours to work out which bacteria is causing the disease. I’m working with coworkers to see if we can reduce that to 8 hours. That way patients will get the right treatment earlier.
