      So this would really depend on how big the vein was and where it is. So veins are the blood vessels that take the blood back to the heart once it has taken the oxygen to the organs and tissues. If one of your major veins was cut (say in an accident), you could lose a lot of blood through it. This would mean our blood pressure would go down (think about a balloon full of water losing some water and going saggy!). This can lead to something called “shock” and you’d need to stop the bleeding.

      For smaller veins, near the outside of the body, the bleeding might stop with a bit of help, and the blood will form a clot to block it off whilst it repairs itself.
